Religious icons have been a common theme for sculptors for many, many centuries. Depictions of beings from nearly every mythology and world religion can be seen throughout history, and from nearly every major civilization that has ever existed. However, for those of us that have grown up in the western part of the world, the angel garden statue is inevitably the most recognized religious sculpture. They have been a common theme in gardens throughout the Western world and are still commonly used in gardens throughout the United States and Europe.
Angels are an important part of many religions, but Christian artists seem to be particularly fond of them. For many centuries, churches from nearly every sect of Christianity have been adorned with angelic sculptures, both on the building itself and throughout the surrounding property. Christian kings and queens have a long tradition of commissioning the most well known artists to produce unique garden sculptures depicting angels and other religious icons for placement in their royal courts and palaces. Many of these original works of art are commonly reproduced in mass-quantities for today’s suburban homes and gardens.
Today, the angel garden statue is more popular than ever before, and for many different reasons. One of the primary reasons for their continued popularity in today’s world has to do with the way they are made. Traditionally, whenever someone wanted to add a statue to their garden they were required to commission the sculpture from a local artisan. This artisan would then select a piece of stone and begin the long, arduous task of shaping the piece using a hammer and chisel. Obviously, this process required a great deal of time and attention to detail, and as such these statues could be outrageously expensive. This made put them outside the budget of anyone but the most wealthy and powerful.
Modern garden statues, on the other hand, are most often made from some type of casting material. Synthetic materials can be easily poured into a pre-formed cast and set to dry, making them exceptionally easy to manufacture. Furthermore, many of these materials, once dried, can mimic the look and feel of natural stones such as marble or granite, and in some cases they can be almost as durable. The ease by which this process can take place results in statues that are a fraction of the cost of a traditional stone sculpture, making them ideally suited for the suburban homeowner.
A casted angel garden statue also has another important advantage, and that advantage is weight. A traditional stone statue can weigh hundreds, if not thousands of pounds, depending on the size and the particular type of stone that is used. This makes them very hard to transport from one location to another, and once they are set, they are rarely moved. However, a casted statue is almost always a mere fraction of the weight of a solid stone version. This means that they can be easily picked up and moved whenever the need arrives, and without the need for a forklift.
