Today’s Gargoyle garden statues are inspired by the original French version. The Old World versions were created to take water from a building. They were named after the French term that means to gargle, bringing to mind the sound of gurgling water.
The statues of gargoyles we see in today’s gardens are not necessary to keep water from masonry. Despite this, they do evoke a special kind of whimsy. Some backyard gardeners add these to their garden in order to add fun elements amidst their plants. Others set out to emulate the figurines seen in European architecture.
To add gargoyle garden statues to your garden area, consider the size and scale of your existing garden. The majority of gargoyles used today are small, ornamental figurines. You will find that some of the options for whimsical garden statuary include those which spit water, reminiscent of the original French versions.
