Some of the most famous gardens throughout history have been adorned with stone garden statues. They have been common to landscaping and garden design from civilizations ranging from the ancient to the modern, and east to west. Statues depicting religious icons have been particularly common over the centuries, but other themes such as mythology and historical persons have also been traditionally quite popular.
Today, garden statuary is as popular as it has ever been, and some could argue even more so.
Sculpture is a form of art that has existed for thousands of years. For even the earliest of human civilizations, statues have held a great deal of fascination for both their ability to remind us of a particular event or person (mythological or otherwise), but also for their sheer beauty and artistic nature. Many of the world’s most famous sculptures are still revered today, with original works being meticulously maintained within the walls of museums and reproductions being sold to thousands of people each year. Modern artists also continue to produce new and exciting works of sculpture, many of which end up being mass-produced and sold through any number of retailers.
For those that are interested in stone garden statues, there are quite literally hundreds, if not thousands of options from which to choose. Whether your tastes tend to lean towards the classic or religious, or more towards the abstract and avant-garde, there is bound to be something for everyone. These statues are commonly sold through local home improvement stores and garden centers, and these businesses are the ideal place to start looking as well. Because these retailers stock these items in house, they are a great way to see and inspect a piece of garden art before one spends the money.
There are also many online retailers that specialize in this type of sculpture, but one is usually limited to seeing photographs of the various options. However, the Internet will inevitably offer many more options than what one would find at a local retailer.
There are basically two different types of stone garden statues that are generally available to the public, solid and cast. Solid stone is the traditional medium of the sculptor, and it has many advantages. For one, few things are more long lasting and durable than is solid marble or granite. Once finished, statues made from such material can last for centuries, as is evidenced by the many works from the ancient world that still exist today. Secondly, solid stone lends itself very well to fine, detailed work, which can be seen in many masterpieces created over the centuries.
However, solid stone also has some significant disadvantages as well, especially for the modern homeowner. The most obvious has to do with cost, as solid stone garden statues can be exceptionally expensive. Because they are handcrafted, and the materials used are quite expensive, the cost is often too much for the average person to afford. Cast stone, on the other hand, is not only a much less expensive alternative, but it is also much lighter in weight, making it easier to transport and or move about the property.
